How to Enjoy Crosby-Cuyuna, MN
How to Enjoy Crosby-Cuyuna, MN
If you are looking for a peaceful getaway trip where you can enjoy what northern Minnesota offers, I highly suggest visiting the Crosby, Minnesota area. Crosby has a rich history of iron ore mines, where many of the abandoned pits are filled with water. The area is laced with trails in the countryside.
History
I love the history of Crosby, especially the iron ore mines. I had many family members involved in the mines in northern Minnesota, so learning and seeing was impactful for me personally.
One of the most notable figures in Crosby’s history is Major David Simon. He climbed into a small capsule and traveled in a balloon. He was in the capsule for 44 hours and reached an altitude of 110,000 feet. He collected much valuable information on altitude effects on the human body, which was later used by NASA. He was the first person to see the curvature of the earth from space. He found the sunset and sunrise particularly moving. He also realized the stars were not twinkling due to the lack of atmosphere. Here is a mural on Dr. Simon painted on one of the Crosby downtown businesses.

Cuyuna Cove
We stayed at the Cuyuna Cove Resort on the edge of Crosby, MN. If you are looking for a simple place to relish in nature, I suggest staying here. Amenities are limited, but if you looking for peace and quiet, this will meet your needs and amenities will take a back seat. Frankly, your cabin is in the woods. You will hear the stillness and sounds of nature.

Trails
If you enjoy nature, walking or biking, . the Crosby area is worth making the trek. The trails are an easy ride. You will see wildlife. In fact, we saw a bear on the trail. Yes, a little freak out, but bears are common in northern Minnesota.
Crosby
I adore small towns. I love the small town attitudes where everyone is so friendly. Crosby is no exception. There are unique specialty shops all within walking distance. I enjoyed the store, Victual – a gourmet grocery store. They were named the 2022-23 Retailer of the Year award. Once you walk in, you will understand why they won.

Small Town Treasures
I love the small town of Crosby and all its unique offerings. One treasure we found was Traditions Mini Golf. Even though I am not good, it was fun! And the owner was especially kind. They also frozen yogurt (along with toppings). And they also offer another activity which was unique – A foosball arena. Instead of a foosball table, adults/children are active participants in a life-size version of foosball.

Food
The Iron Range Eatery offered outdoor seating along with their great food. Another great place to eat is to drive to Aikin (15 minutes) and eat at the Forty Club. We enjoyed a walleye meal. I highly recommend both of these places.

I enjoyed visiting the Cuyuna/Crosby area. It was great to take a break from life and enjoy what nature offers. I would go back if I have a chance in the future.
